Steve Barnes is the Head of Corporate and Investment Banking (CIB) for South Africa at Standard Bank Group, bringing more than two decades of experience across global markets, client coverage, and institutional banking. He joined Standard Bank in 2002 and has since held several senior leadership roles within the CIB division, building deep expertise in structuring, market solutions, and strategic client engagement.

His career includes serving as Head of Structured Sales for Global Markets South Africa and Head of the Financial Institutions Group. In his current role, Steve provides strategic leadership across the South African CIB platform, overseeing key client relationships, business growth, and risk and regulatory governance.

Steve plays an active role in advancing Standard Bank’s Africancentric mandate, offering thought leadership on market trends, economic developments, and capital flows. He works closely with clients, policymakers, and regulators to support sustainable growth and financial sector development across the region.
