Simpiwe “Sim” Tshabalala is Chief Executive of the Standard Bank Group, Africa’s largest banking group by assets. He was appointed sole CEO in 2017, having previously served as joint Chief Executive and Deputy Chief Executive.
Sim joined Standard Bank in 2000 and has held senior leadership roles across Corporate and Investment Banking, Personal and Business Banking, and the Group’s African operations. He has played a central role in expanding Standard Bank’s panAfrican footprint and strengthening its position as a leading emergingmarkets financial institution.
A qualified attorney of the High Court of South Africa, Sim began his career in law before moving into investment banking and structured finance. He holds a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws from Rhodes University, a Master of Laws from the University of Notre Dame (summa cum laude), and completed Harvard University’s Advanced Management Programme.
He serves as ViceChairman and Treasurer of the Institute of International Finance and participates in several global advisory bodies focused on economic policy and private sector development. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Bankers of South Africa and an Honorary Professor at the University of Stellenbosch Business School.
