Letsholo Nelson Makamo is a Johannesburg‑based visual artist whose work challenges global perceptions through intimate, emotionally resonant portraits of African children. Born in Limpopo, he has built an internationally recognised practice over more than two decades. 

Trained at Artist Proof Studio, Makamo began in printmaking before developing a mixed‑media approach, with charcoal becoming his signature medium. His work spans silkscreen, monotype, acrylic, oil, and watercolour, exploring themes of identity, resilience, and representation. 

Makamo’s art has received global attention, including an appearance on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah and features in publications such as TIME magazine. His practice contributes meaningfully to contemporary conversations on identity and the representation of African youth.
