H.E. Lerato Dorothy Mataboge
Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy, African Union

H.E. Ms Lerato Dorothy Mataboge is the African Union’s Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy. She is an experienced policy, trade, and investment facilitation expert with a strong track record in infrastructure development, regional integration, and multilateral economic engagement. 

Before joining the African Union, she served as Deputy Director‑General at South Africa’s Department of Trade, Industry and Competition and previously founded and led Trade Invest Africa. She has also served as a Non‑Executive Director of the Export Credit Insurance Corporation of South Africa (ECIC). 

Ms Mataboge has been a key contributor to Africa’s trade and infrastructure agenda, leading South Africa’s engagement in platforms such as BRICS, IORA, the G20/B20, and the AfCFTA negotiations. She chaired the Presidential Steering Committee on the North‑South Corridor under the AU’s Presidential Infrastructure Championing Initiative (PICI) and previously served as Minister: Economic at the South African Embassy in Washington, D.C. 

She holds a Master’s degree in International Political Economy from the University of Warwick, an Honours degree in International Relations from the University of the Witwatersrand, and a Bachelor of Arts in Law and International Relations, and has completed executive education at the Harvard Kennedy School.
