In line with our efforts to improve the lives of African citizens, we are proud to announce our partnership with the Malawian Government, where we secured K34.5 billion (R500 million) in funding for the landmark Kenyatta Drive and Mzimba Street project.

This transaction is the largest global currency facility in Malawi, and the project will involve the construction of a 6-lane highway in Malawi’s capital city Lilongwe. Located in Lilongwe, Kenyatta Drive and Mzimba Street connect Old Town to the heart of the central business district at the City Centre and connect the city to Kamuzu Central Hospital. One of the biggest challenges the country currently faces is congestion, which limits people’s access to essential services such as hospitals and inhibits the free flow of goods which impacts Malawi’s economic growth.

The construction of the new road will boost the country's overall growth by improving transport networks, enhancing city interconnections, increasing trade and access to goods, creating job opportunities and giving Malawians better access to healthcare services.

At Standard Bank, we believe that driving Africa’s growth starts with supporting projects that improve the well-being of citizens and contribute to a country's long-term economic growth. As Africa’s largest bank by assets, we leverage our on-the-ground presence, local expertise and ability to develop innovative funding packages to support projects that directly impact citizens' well-being and create a ripple effect of positive change throughout the continent.
