Proud sponsor of the African Mining Indaba 2021
Resilience and Regrowth: Sustainable Mining in a COVID-Recovery World
The 2021 Mining Indaba virtual event took place from 2 to 3 February 2021, with free registration offered to all attendees. Heralded as the world’s largest mining investment event, it attracted key industry stakeholders, from presidents and ministers to CEOs of major mining companies. The theme for this year’s Mining Indaba was ‘Resilience and regrowth: Adopting the new mindset for African mining’.
The mining industry’s shift towards a greener, more sustainable and more community-orientated business model has been accelerating as mining groups seek to maintain their social licence to operate and position themselves for long-term growth. The continued focus on climate change and on the wellbeing of local communities has meant that many mining groups have responded by accelerating the reduction of carbon emissions and addressing social issues. We recognise that this transition is an ongoing process that many of our clients have undertaken to meet regulatory, legislative and societal needs.

With a view to the progressive change in the mining industry, there were two full days focused on engaging audiences on this topic. The discussions ranged across delving into ESG investing in a COVID-recovery world, looking into how African mining could harness automation in a pandemic to help grow economies, responsible sourcing of African metals, as well as green metals and global carbonisation.
Standard Bank was once again proud to be a sponsor of the African Mining Indaba as part of our commitment to taking the sector forward. We recognise the Mining Indaba as a long-term driver of economic growth for both South Africa and the continent alike.
