Standard Bank is proud to announce that it has successfully executed a secondary placement of Anglo American’s residual 19.9% stake in Valterra Platinum by way of an accelerated bookbuild. This landmark deal, the largest ever equity capital markets transaction on the JSE, underscores Standard Bank’s expertise in executing ground-breaking capital markets transactions and supporting clients in realising their strategic objectives.

The global mining sector is in a constant state of evolution, driven by shifting commodity demands, environmental considerations and strategic portfolio optimisation. Major players like Anglo American are continually refining their asset bases to focus on core strengths and maximise shareholder value. This often involves divesting non-core assets to streamline operations, strengthen balance sheets and concentrate resources on high-potential ventures. The ability to execute such divestments efficiently and effectively is crucial for maintaining competitive advantage and delivering on long-term strategic commitments.

In this context, Standard Bank was appointed to assist Anglo American with the conclusion of the separation of its platinum assets, in line with its strategic commitment to simplifying its portfolio and focusing on its world-class positions in copper, premium iron ore, and crop nutrients. The transaction resulted in Anglo American accelerating the responsible divestment of its residual 19.9% stake in Valterra Platinum, raising proceeds of ZAR44.1 billion, thereby strengthening the Anglo-American balance sheet. Acting as Joint Global Coordinator and as sole South African bank on the transaction, the accelerated bookbuild demonstrates Standard Bank’s ability to provide strategic capital markets advice and structure and distribute landmark equity capital markets transactions.

This transaction reinforces Standard Bank’s position as the premier equity capital markets house in Africa and South Africa, showcasing our commitment to driving growth across the continent. By supporting Anglo American in the realisation of this divestment, Standard Bank has helped a key client achieve its strategic ambitions, ultimately contributing to its long-term growth and value creation.
